Motorcycle Accidents

According to recent findings by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, along with a spike in motorcycle registrations in the State of Florida, motorcycle crash fatalities are on the rise in Florida.

Throughout the country, motorcycle fatalities have more than doubled in the past 10 years.  With the number of motorcycles registered in the state and the number of motorcyclists visiting the State of Florida, it should come as no surprise that Florida leads the nation in motorcycle crash fatalities.  In 2007 alone, there were a staggering 530 fatalities in this state.

The Leading Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

  • The main cause of motorcycle crashes is the failure of motorists to detect motorcycles in traffic. Most often, the driver of the other vehicle did not see the motorcycle before the collision occurred, or did not see the motorcycle until it was too late to avoid the collision. Reports indicate that frequently, other drivers violate the motorcycle’s right-of-way and cause the accident.
  • In instances where motorcycle accidents do not involve another vehicle, the leading cause of the motorcycle accident is a collision with the roadway or some fixed object in the environment. In some instances, the object was the result of negligence by the county or municipality to properly maintain its roadways.

Motorcycle Safety Tips

Did you know that wearing a helmet lowers a motorcycle rider's risk of fatal injury by 29% and reduces the risk of traumatic brain injury by 67%?  The following are additional ways in which bikers can stay safe on Florida’s treacherous roads:

  • Participate in a certified motorcycle safety training course
  • Wear protective gear
    • Invest in a helmet manufactured to Dept. of Transportation (DOT) standards
    • Wear gloves and over the ankle leather boots
    • Protective eyewear such as safety goggles or a helmet shield
    • Clothing made of a durable fabric such as denim or leather
    • Wearing bright colors increases visibility
    • Motorcyclists can be hard to see - wear reflective clothing at night
  • Ride unimpaired by alcohol or other drugs.

Florida Law Mandates Motorcycle Safety Education Course

As of July 2008, the Florida Motorcycle Safety Education Course “Riding and Street Skills” is mandatory for all riders seeking a new "Motorcycle Endorsement" or "Motorcycle Only" Florida Driver’s License. The course is a basic rider course designed to help beginning motorcyclists develop the physical and mental skills necessary to ride safely.
